Almost everyone is affected by noise pollution these days. A survey by the Federal Environment Agency shows that more than half of the German population feels disturbed by road traffic noise. Noise is measured in dB A (decibel A), which is not the absolute volume but the so-called sound pressure level. As a rule of thumb: if the sound pressure level is reduced by 10 dB(A), noise is perceived as only half as loud. Heavy truck traffic, for example, has a sound pressure level of about 90 dB(A) and is perceived as very unpleasant. The sound pressure level of normal road traffic is approx. 80 dB(A) and is perceived as much quieter. While there is a noise level of 40 dB(A) in the living room, the sound pressure level in the bedroom is slightly above 20 dB(A).

According to the Federal Environmental Agency, one in five people is negatively impacted by noise from railway, street and flight traffic with a sound pressure level exceeding 55 dB during the day. During the night, one in eight people are disturbed in their sleep by traffic noise of over 50 dB(A) - not counting loud neighbours or strong background noise in their buildings. People living in Berlin, Bremen and Hamburg are the most severely affected. The noise map shows very clearly: in order to protect our health, sound insulation measures are required.
