Surface protection for long-lasting and enduringly beautiful surfaces
For modernised building elements to stand the test of time, surface quality is crucial. In the case of aluminium building elements, a high-quality coating provides surface protection right from the start. It reliably protects windows, doors, roller shutters and roofing from the weather, UV radiation and environmental influences, preserves colour vibrancy and shine, and ensures that the property’s appearance, functionality and value are maintained over time.
Benefits of surface protection using modern coatings
Protection against environmental factors
High-quality coatings provide surface protection right from the start and offer durability for aluminium building elements against the elements, UV radiation and environmental factors.
Durability and value retention
Well-protected surfaces reduce maintenance requirements and help to extend the service life of building elements. This means fewer repairs and long-term value retention.
Aesthetics and individuality
Surfaces not only serve a protective function, but also play a key role in defining a building’s appearance. Colour, gloss level and texture have a decisive influence on the appearance of windows, doors, roller shutters and roofing.
What types of surface coatings are available, and what factors are important?
The surface coating is not merely a design feature; it also provides essential surface protection: it shields windows, doors, roller shutters and roofs from the elements and UV radiation. As such, the coating affects not only the appearance but also the resistance level, maintenance requirements and lifespan of the structure.
Types of coating for aluminium building elements
Powder coating A particularly durable coating with a high UV-resistance level and a wide range of colours. It provides reliable protection for aluminium against the elements and allows for a wide variety of colour and design options.
Eloxal (Anodising) A method of protecting metal surfaces that creates a particularly hard oxide layer. The surface takes on a characteristic metallic sheen and is just as durable and high-quality as a powder coating.
Surface options and finishes
Textured and matt finishes Coatings can be produced in a variety of textures and gloss levels – ranging from smooth and glossy to matt or finely textured.
Why aluminium is particularly suitable as a base material
Aluminium is, by its very nature, an excellent material for outside building elements. It combines stability, weather resistance and a wide range of design options.
Aluminium naturally forms a thin, protective oxide layer. This protects the material from corrosion and ensures that building elements remain durable even when used outside on a long-term basis. However, this natural protective layer alone is not sufficient to ensure long-term protection and a
Aluminium naturally forms a thin, protective oxide layer. This protects the material from corrosion and ensures that building elements remain durable even when used outside on a long-term basis. However, this natural protective layer alone is not sufficient to ensure long-term protection and a lasting high-quality appearance. Only an additional surface coating specifically strengthens this protection and ensures that aluminium components remain resistant to intense UV radiation, weathering and mechanical stress. At the same time, it ensures stable colour retention and lasting gloss – requirements that cannot be met with untreated aluminium.
Lightweight and sturdy
Despite its light weight, aluminium is highly dimensionally stable and robust. This makes it ideal for durable windows, doors, roller shutters and roofing.
Easy to care for
Coated aluminium surfaces are smooth, less prone to dirt and dust, and are easy to clean.
Wide range of designs
Aluminium surfaces can be finished in a wide range of colours, textures and effects. This allows building elements to be perfectly matched to the architecture and existing structures.
heroal surface coating: quality and design from a single source
When performing aluminium surface coatings, heroal employs modern processes that are optimally tailored to different building elements. The combination of these coating technologies results in durable surfaces with a high resistance level and great design flexibility. Systems such as window, door, roller shutter and sun protection systems can thus be combined perfectly, not only functionally but also visually. Various coating technologies are used, which together ensure a durable surface.
The highly weather-resistant powder coating reliably protects extruded aluminium profiles (e.g. window or door profiles) against the elements, UV radiation and environmental factors. At the same time, it ensures excellent colour stability and long-lasting gloss retention.
heroal 2-coat thick coating
A special coating process is used for roll-formed components such as roller shutter profiles. This process offers outstanding resistance to abrasion and weathering, as well as excellent colour fastness.
heroal Surface Design (SD)
With heroal Surface Design, finishes resembling wood, concrete or rust can be achieved. Following application of the highly weather-resistant heroal hwr powder coating, the profiles are wrapped in a transfer film coated with sublimation ink. Under the influence of heat, a vacuum is created, causing the ink to be fused into the powder coating. Once the foil is removed, the high-quality surface look is revealed. heroal SD forms a permanent connection with the underlying hwr powder coating. This is how heroal Surface Design (SD) achieves first-class surface quality.
Protect and maintain surfaces in the long term
To ensure that aluminium surfaces retain their quality and appearance over time, it is not only a question of a high-quality coating, but also of proper care.
Regular cleaning
As a general rule, it is sufficient to clean the surface with water and a mild cleaning agent. Harsh solvents or abrasive cleaners should be avoided, as these can attack the coating and cause long-term damage. Gentle care helps to preserve the appearance and protective function of the surface over the long term.
Inspection and minor repairs
Minor scratches or damage should be identified at an early stage and repaired professionally if necessary. This prevents humidity from penetrating deeper layers and causing damage. Depending on the coating, suitable repair systems are used which are colour-matched and ensure long-term protection and appearance.
A high-quality coating protects building elements from the elements, UV radiation, dirt and mechanical loads. This ensures that the appearance, sheen and material quality are preserved in the long term. At the same time, a surface with a high resistance level helps to extend the service life of building elements and safeguard the value of the property.
Common coating processes for aluminium building elements include, in particular, powder coating and Eloxal finishes. These provide the actual surface protection and ensure a resistance level against weathering, UV radiation and environmental factors. Regardless of the coating process chosen, surfaces can be finished in various versions – for example, in a matt, gloss or textured finish. These so-called finishes primarily influence the look and feel, as well as the susceptibility to signs of wear and tear.
Aluminium is lightweight, strong and naturally corrosion-resistant. The material forms a protective oxide layer, making it well-suited for use outside.
However, aluminium truly comes into its own in a combination with a high-quality surface coating: this builds on the natural protective layer, strengthens the resistance level against weathering, UV radiation and mechanical stress, whilst ensuring that the colour and gloss remain consistently stable over time. The result is durable building elements that impress both functionally and visually in the long term.
As a general rule, regular cleaning with water and a mild cleaning agent is sufficient. Harsh or abrasive cleaning agents should be avoided so as not to damage the protective coating. Minor scratches should be spotted early on and, if necessary, repaired by a specialist company.
High-quality coatings are dimensioned to last a long time and, with proper care, remain durable and colourfast for many years. Their actual lifespan depends, among other things, on environmental conditions, usage and regular cleaning.
